Community Spirit in Action: Rotary Club Steps Up

Members of the Rotary Club of Whitburn have proudly raised £5,000 in support of three vital departments at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary (ERI): Clinical Neurology (DCN), Orthopaedics, and the MS Department. The fundraising effort was inspired by the personal experiences of multiple club members and their families, who have benefitted from the expertise and compassion of NHS staff across these services.
Three Rotary Club members; John Fisher (Snr), John Strang, Jonathan Moore and a friend, John Fisher (Jnr), took part in the recent Edinburgh Kiltwalk to champion the cause. Their efforts culminated in a cheque presentation ceremony at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, attended by representatives from Whitburn Rotary, senior staff from Mark Hughes DCN and Katy Murray Anne Rowling MS Clinic, and Tumong Edwards, Community and Events Fundraiser at NHS Lothian Charity.
Walkers reflected on the experience:
During the Kiltwalk to help raise funds in aid of the NHS, there was a special atmosphere, excitement and energy walking together with others.”
“Each individual felt proud to be involved in something that will make a real difference in the lives of those we may never meet.”
“Rotary’s motto is ‘Service above Self,’ and what we have achieved stands testament to this.”
The President of the Rotary Club of Alistair Marquis commented:
Our members were proud to support the Kiltwalkers and the NHS, which is always there to help individuals in their time of need. This project captured the hearts of many and highlighted the power of community spirit.”
Lead Kiltwalker John Fisher added:
The NHS plays such a vital role in all our lives. It was a privilege to fundraise for the Infirmary and to walk alongside so many others. We hoped to raise a few thousand pounds, but thanks to the generosity of our members and supporters, we reached an incredible £5,000. Warm thanks to everyone who contributed.”
Tumong Edwards of NHS Lothian Charity said:
We are deeply grateful to the Rotary Club of Whitburn for taking on the miles to raise such an incredible amount. Their dedication means our NHS teams can do even more to change and save lives whether through new equipment, innovative projects, or research.”
This inspiring initiative stands as a shining example of community-led support for the NHS and the enduring impact of collective action.
