Local Café Owner Donates Entire Day’s Takings to Support NHS Lothian Charity’s Secret Santa Appeal
Fadi Bacheet, owner of Bliss House Café, Meadowbank is spreading festive cheer this Christmas by pledging an entire day’s takings on 24 December to NHS Lothian Charity’s Secret Santa Appeal. The appeal helps bring comfort and joy to patients, visitors, and NHS staff who spend the festive season in hospital, away from family and away from home.
Fadi’s decision reflects his appreciation for NHS care. Knowing first-hand the difference it makes, he’s determined to support patients and staff this Christmas. Reflecting on his own experience, he shared:
Three and a half years ago, I had a serious sports accident and shattered my left wrist. I needed urgent surgery and spent almost two weeks in hospital, followed by around a year and a half of recovery, physiotherapy, and regular hospital visits.
“During that time, the hardest part wasn’t the pain, it was the loneliness. Being away from my family was extremely difficult. I saw people who were sad, I saw children crying, and I also saw the joy on their faces when someone they loved walked into the room. That moment of comfort meant everything.
“The truth is that all of us, at some point in our lives, may find ourselves in hospital. And while we can’t remove the physical challenges, we can help lift someone’s spirit. Even a small gesture can bring comfort, hope, and a feeling that they are not alone.
“That’s why I decided to support NHS Lothian Charity, to help bring warmth, support, and happiness to people during their most difficult moments. And the Secret Santa Appeal does exactly that, it reminds patients that their community cares about them.
“Christmas has two sides: A happy side, full of celebration, and a sad side, for those who must spend it away from home, away from family, in a hospital bed.
“We should recognise both sides. And if we can help ease the sadness even a little, we should.
“We can’t change the world completely, but we must not let the world change us.
Let’s do something kind this Christmas. Let’s bring happiness to those who need it most.”
Vanessa Healey from NHS Lothian Charity, said:
Fadi’s story is truly touching and embodies what our Secret Santa Appeal is all about. We’re so grateful for his generosity, donating a whole day’s revenue from his café is an incredible gesture. Please pop by Bliss House Café on 24 December to show your support and help us spread a little cheer to those who can’t be home for the festivities.”
NHS Lothian Charity’s Secret Santa Appeal helps to create joyful, warm memories for those spending Christmas in hospital, recognising that the season can feel difficult for patients and families.
