Creating a Brighter, More Welcoming Space: Upgrading the Children’s Ward Hub at St John’s Hospital

The hub on the children’s ward at St John’s Hospital is the heart of the team’s work. A space where staff coordinate care and sometimes invite families to discuss treatment plans. But until recently, it wasn’t the most welcoming environment. Peeling paint, and a lack of comfort made it far from ideal.

Thanks to generous donations, the hub has had a much-needed refresh. Fresh paint, new blinds, secure lockers, and comfortable seating have made the space brighter, warmer, and more practical for staff and families alike.

Why It Matters

This upgrade might seem simple, but it’s made a big difference. The hub is where care decisions happen, and now it’s a space that feels professional and inviting. Families can be welcomed in to view x-rays and discuss treatment without feeling like they’re stepping into a cramped, tired room.

The Impact

Since the improvements were made, staff have noticed some real benefits:

  • Better patient experience: A calmer, more organised hub means staff are more productive and less stressed leading to smoother communication and enhanced patient care. The upgrade means it’s easier for staff to work together more coherently which means patients are seen quicker which means they have to spend less time in the hospital.
  • Improved clinical outcomes: Patients are seen quicker, spend less time in hospital, and feel more informed about their care. With better communication and coordination, patients receive faster diagnoses and are more informed about their care.
  • Staff wellbeing: An improved working environment reduces stress and helps staff feel valued and motivated, making coming to work a more positive experience.
  • Reach: Around 300 patients each month now benefit from this improvement.

Looking Ahead

This isn’t just a short-term fix. The refreshed hub will continue to support patients and staff for years to come, helping ensure care is delivered in an environment that reflects the compassion and professionalism of the team.

Thanks to your support, we’ve created a brighter, more welcoming space for patients, families, and staff at St John’s Hospital. Every gift makes this possible.
