Shaurya’s Story: Coming together to ‘be more Dhruv’ and celebrate a brother, son, friend and colleague

When Shaurya Abhi signed up for the Edinburgh Marathon Festival, it wasn’t just about crossing the finish line – it was about honouring his brother, Dhruv.
Dr Dhruv Abhi was a dedicated oncologist at NHS Lothian’s Edinburgh Cancer Centre. He was also a brother, a son, a friend and a colleague. He loved his work, his friends and family, and the simple joys in life – like a cold beer in the sun. When Dhruv sadly passed away in December 2024, his family and friends were left heartbroken. But in their grief, they found a way to celebrate his life, and his legacy of warmth and compassion.
Dhruv’s passion for oncology stemmed from his own family’s experience, witnessing his mother’s cancer diagnosis when he was just 21. This fuelled his determination to become a doctor and make a difference in the lives of others. He was also deeply involved in cancer research, dedicating countless hours to his academic pursuits.
As a way to focus their grief and honour Dhruv’s memory, his brother, Shaurya, signed up to run the full marathon at the Edinburgh Marathon Festival, with his dad running the half. What started as a personal tribute to his brother quickly grew into something extraordinary. Friends, family, and colleagues from all over the world came together to form a team of almost 60 runners, proudly calling themselves “Beers in the Sun” in honour of Dhruv’s favourite way to unwind.
Some took on the Hairy Haggis Relay, others the 10K, half, or full marathon, united in their desire to ‘be more Dhruv’ and embrace life with the same enthusiasm and joy that he did. Every step was taken with Dhruv in their hearts.

“Grief is hard,” Shaurya shared. “But training for this marathon gave me something to focus on. It’s been the hardest six months of my life, but I’m so grateful to be here, surrounded by people who loved Dhruv. What a privilege it has been. I can’t wait to enjoy a cold beer in the sun with them all. Pain is nothing but French bread!”
The team’s energy, love, and determination were infectious. And they didn’t just run – they raised over £23,000 to support the Edinburgh Cancer Centre, where Dhruv had worked and cared for so many. Their fundraising will help enhance patient comfort and care, support staff wellbeing, and fund groundbreaking research – causes Dhruv was deeply passionate about.
“Their love and respect for Dhruv shine so brightly,” said Tumong Edwards, NHS Lothian Charity’s Community and Events Fundraiser. “Shaurya and the “Beers in the Sun” team remind us that even in the darkest times, there’s strength to be found in coming together. We’re so proud to have been part of their journey, and the journey of all our runners, whose dedication, commitment and enthusiasm will bring comfort and support to countless others now and in the future. “
